3 Crucial Communications Tips When Starting A New Job

3 crucial communications tips when starting a new job This is not your ordinary career site. I help the corporate worker who toils away in the company cubicle make career transitions. You want to do your job well, following all the rules -- . The career transitions where I can help you center on three critical career areas: How to land a job, succeed in a job, and build employment security. Top 10 Posts on Categories Starting a new job, even one for the same company, is inspiring, stressful, and fantastic â€" all at the same time. We sometimes get so wrapped up in our emotions in starting a new job that we forget basic communications techniques we need to follow. Starting out on a new job means we have to watch how we communicate in order to succeed. Here are the principles to follow: In my book, I’ve Landed My Dream Job â€" Now What???, I spend a lot of time talking about getting your goals, how you are to achieve them, and how the goals are measured from your manager. There are good reasons for this. You want to ensure you bring your job skills immediately on line with what you need to accomplish on the job. Without knowing what needs accomplishing, you won’t be working on the most valuable stuff for your manager. As well, you need to know how to measure that you are succeeding in working on the right stuff. Without having an independent way of knowing how you are doing, you won’t know if you get off track. The only way to know these critical starting goals is to communicate with your manager. Find out the goals and how they are measured. And, once you start work on the goals, practice prototyping your work with your manager to catch what you are doing right and what can be improved early on. I had a manager comment on one of my articles that he/she expected the new hire to ask questions â€" but noticeably absent was any offer to provide information about the job. Crazy, but true. Some managers just throw you into the pool and watch to see if you will sink or swim. Thus, you need to prepare yourself to ask your manager and your coworkers where the information is to do your job. If you try and reinvent the wheel, you will waste time and could be viewed as not knowing how to to the work. All because you didn’t ask. It is easy to have a subject come up and â€" since you are told to speak up to be visible in a job all the time â€" you take over the conversation about how you do stuff, how you did stuff in your previous job, or offer a process on how to do the work. Early in the job, this is viewed as being pushy, or knowing it all, or arrogant for thinking you have all the answers. Even when you do. Instead, until you fully understand the context of subjects your coworkers bring up, you should listen way more than you talk. And when you talk, you should ask more questions to gain more insight. You need to contribute, of course. But by asking a question to clarify context before you offer a suggestion, you won’t immediately launch into a monologue about how to do something before pulling a Rosanadana moment. Remember, there are a whole set of unwritten rules, processes, and social hierarchies associated with your team. Each team handles conflicts, suggestions, recommendations, and accepting work differently. Since you are the outsider coming in on your new job, your teammates expect you to integrate with them, not them integrate with you (which is why interviewing to find out about the team is so critically important in a job search). Start off right by communicating well right from the beginning of your new job. Good points on the career change; a nice place to start. I harp quite a bit on the “you must know yourself” so you get the right types of work, so going into depth on those ten items will be needed. Thanks for leaving the comment; I really appreciate it! Reply Very nice, Chuck! Drop me a note if the offer comes through. You have done a great job in the interview process. Reply this is such a good read. thanks a lot for this. most of us change jobs a lot without even realizing why we are changing in the first place. this blog is a good way for us to stop, breathe and think first before jumping into a new job again. who knows maybe after improving our ways in communicating, we won’t need to change jobs that often. P.S. I suggest you also check out http://sn.im/103mkj â€" it’s a nice read about 10 steps to having a successful career change. Reply Another great and timely post! I expect to have a job offer this week for a new job and this information and the book will be very valuable. Reply This is a nice summary. I definitely agree with listening more than you talk when you first start a job. I’m a big talker, but I make sure I am all ears as my senses are on high alert whenever I come into a new situation. The sooner you understand the environment you are in, the sooner you can start adding to progress of the team in a way that everyone will enjoy. Another thing I would add is for you to try and do something new within the first few weeks. After you have a better understanding of the team you are working with, share and article or idea that someone might fight interesting. If you are going to own your career, you have to show others what you can bring to the table. Nobody is going to reach in your head and pull out what you know, so you should begin sharing some of your insights, without being a know it all. Reply This is not your ordinary career site. I help the corporate worker who toils away in the company cubicle make career transitions. You want to do your job well, following all the rules â€" . Adding and Subtracting to Make the Next Generation of Hybrid 3DCNC Machines

Adding and Subtracting to Make the Next Generation of Hybrid 3DCNC Machines Adding and Subtracting to Make the Next Generation of Hybrid 3DCNC Machines Adding and Subtracting to Make the Next Generation of Hybrid 3D-CNC Machines Regardless of how ground-breaking, 3D printers cannot print everything. In spite of the fact that there are various advances accessible for printing metal parts, there are additionally various special cases. The similarity of materials and machines can change essentially, printers manufacture volumes are constrained in size, and frequently 3D printers cannot reproduce the sort of accuracy required for strategic parts that require processing and machining to complete the surface. Nonetheless, multi-machines that join added substance with different strategies for assembling could end up being more financially savvy and productive than traditional 3D printing. A few organizations in the added substance fabricating (AM) space have started investigating approaches to consolidate subtractive and added substance advancements. Hurco, an Indianapolis, IN.,- based machine-device organization, has been trying different things with adding added substance abilities to its in any case subtractive PC numerical control (CNC) innovation. CNC machines utilize advanced PC models to control the speed and heading of a machine, switch, or other cutting apparatus mounted on an axle, so as to shape complex parts out of a strong bit of metal or plastic. Including added substance A year ago, Hurco declared its patent for a connector to CNC machines, which viably transforms them into 3D printers. This 1990s time CNC machine was paid off eBay and redesigned with a LENS 3D print head, laser-safe hood, controller, and powder feeder, so metal parts can be produced utilizing both added substance and subtractive innovations. Picture: Optomec A portion of our client base invests energy making models for clients, and right now theyre losing a portion of that business to individuals who are making models utilizing 3D printers, says Elias Pavlakos, creator of the patent. The organization wrote in a discharge that the connector permits clients to go from print to plastic model to completed metal part on one machine without rehashed arrangements and without various prototyping using exorbitant metals and crude material. 3D printing is exceptionally valuable in the capacity to quickly deliver a plan, get it to a clients hands, get some input from them, and afterward repeat over and over, Pavlakos says. You can create an item that better accommodates your clients needs, on the grounds that youre ready to emphasize a lot more occasions, and still convey a last item in a generally brief timeframe. Including subtractive Somewhere else, America Makes of Youngstown, OH. one of the countries heads in AM and 3D-printing innovation researchperiodically gives venture calls. Chosen organizations can get Department of Defense financing for ventures that advance the 3D printing industry. This intricate metal part was made utilizing both added substance and subtractive assembling procedures in only three weeks, contrasted and the 52 weeks that would be required utilizing another strategy. Picture: Optomec Optomec, an Albuquerque, NM., provider of AM frameworks, addressed America Makes 2014 undertaking call with a proposed cutting edge 3D printer. The organization wound up winning the honor for its concept of consolidating a conventional CNC machine device with LENS, its powdered metal laser-based 3D-printing innovation. We took the basic segments of our framework, which is our print head, our powder feeders, and our control programming, says Tom McDonald, Optomec program chief for the venture, and we essentially bundled it as a unit that we could take and put on any CNC machine device. Many, numerous factories...have machine apparatuses that are staying there underutilized, where they could take a current machine device, add the capacity to it, so theyve got both testimony and machining on a similar work cell, Richard Grylls, Optomecs senior supervisor for LENS innovation, said in a video discharge. The organization as of late exhibited the idea on an old CNC machine from the 1990s, bought on eBay. We essentially stripped it out, put another controller on it, included laser affidavit capabilitypowder feeders, laser testimony headand made a half and half machine where we have both the capacity to do ordinary machining on a factory, and do laser statement next to each other, said Grylls. Initially Optomec just wanted to make the innovation accessible as a retrofit to restore an old framework, yet the idea has developed to selling it as an embellishment unit for another CNC machine, McDonald says. Theyre getting into added substance fabricating a lot less expensive than purchasing a full framework, Grylls said. Just the market will tell in the coming months and years which course it will go. The new boondocks of added substance assembling can be scary to explore; luckily, theres the ASME AM3D gathering to help control you as you coordinate AM into your business. Get familiar with the ASME Additive Manufacturing and 3D Printing Conference and Expo here. Holly Martin is an autonomous essayist. You can create an item that better meets your clients' requirements, since you're ready to repeat a lot more occasions, and still convey a last item in a moderately brief time of timeElias Pavlakos, Hurco

What NOT To Say in the Interview

What NOT To Say in the Interview There is an unspoken set of rules that goes on in the interview. And you are expected to know them. These rules come from the recruiter or hiring manager. They have things they want to hear and things they don’t want to hear. How do you know what they are and how do you prepare for them? Candidates practice their interviewing skills vigorously. They read up on what to say, how to answer. Dress appropriately. Smile. Follow body language. Get in front of a mirror and practice. Be on time, but not too early. They go over their lists of strengths and weaknesses, their accomplishments, their contributions to the last job, what they offer this new company. But what about the things they should NOT say? Interviewers are weighing what you DON’T say just as much as what you do say. Here are 7 key things you shouldnt say in the interview. 1. Salary. “How much does this pay?” is one of the worst ways to start a conversation. Dont talk about it right away. The longer you wait, the more leverage you have when negotiations start. They know you are anxious for clarity but they are also interested in what their ROI will be before they make an offer. Wait it out. 2. Company. Come prepared. Know what the company does! Know their mission, product, or service. What do they do? Who do they sell to? Who is their biggest competitor? What were their quarterly and year-end earnings last year? Act as though you are the company ambassador. The more you know about it, the more impressed they will be. Telling the interviewer you are sort of familiar with their company will put you in the NO pile. 3. Your old company. Do not bash your last company, manager, co-workers, or the way they did things. It might have ended badly, but the new company doesnt need to hear about it. It makes you look bad and will let them know that you will bash them as well. It also makes you look difficult or whiny. Honestly, when I talk to a client and all they do is bash their old company, it does send up some red flags. I also assume that the client will be difficult to work with (past experience tells me they will). Work out your feelings before going to an interview and leave it behind. 4. I need this job. Dont let your desperation show. They know you want the job. They know you (most likely) need the money. Keep your focus on what the company needs from you and how you are the right fit for the role. You want to lead with your strengths and experience. They don’t want just anyone for the job. They want the RIGHT person. 5. I want your job. When they ask you where do you see yourself in 5 years dont tell them you want their job. You might think it sounds ambitious but it could come off as arrogant or that you plan on leaving soon. Plus, you may be talking to a sensitive or worried manager who doesn’t know how stable their job is. Telling them you want their job may automatically make them defensive or turned off. Instead, let them know that you hope to gain experience and knowledge from the role with a promotion following. This is a stepping stone. If you know this next role is only to benefit your career through additional experience so you can move on to the role after that, don’t tell the interviewer that. They don’t need to know that you only view their company as temporary. They want to hire someone committed to the company and the role. 7. Questions. Have questions ready! Expectations? Culture? What is a typical day like? How do you measure success in this position? What type of advancement is there? What types of challenges should I expect? Who will I be working with? You’ve read my resume and spoken with me, do you think I am a good fit for the role? Even ask them about their role! Going to an interview without follow up questions will make you look unprepared. Interview donts are just as important as interview dos.   Good luck!

Team-Building for Collaboration

Team-Building for Collaboration Teams are formed to accomplish a shared purpose and their success will depend on familiarity with each others work style, experience on prior teams, and their clarity of purpose and performance is hampered if team members don’t work well together. The Oxford Dictionary of English defines collaboration as “an action of working with someone to produce something” â€" a collaborative environment is vital for team success. Harnessing the potential of individuals as a team can be helped along with a few simple building blocks: Formulate or review the teams purpose Allow each team member to express commitment Use the common purpose to prioritise team actions High performing team members are co-operative rather than competitive and support one another in working towards the common goal. It’s pretty much what defines a team a group of people working together toward a common goal. Communication and trust Building an environment of trust and empowering collaboration depends on good communication and trust. Where team members can communicate freely, sharing knowledge and skills, learning from each other and sharing resources they are more likely to establish strong collaboration. A high performing team combines high-frequency communication with openness and a willingness to tackle differences. Trust is also essential as if employees don’t feel trusted and respected, they may not participate or share ideas. All employees should feel comfortable in contributing their ideas, an inclusive approach boosts ideas pool. A team needs support to discover the best ways of accomplishing goals and a level of autonomy to question and brainstorm and to learn from their mistakes and inefficiencies. Collaboration doesn’t necessarily mean lack of conflict, on the contrary, learning how to address challenges makes a team stronger and more cohesive. Collaborative teams work successfully when members pick up on each others feelings, share their concerns and have the skill to challenge inappropriate behaviour and give honest feedback. Support and feedback A team is only going to work as well as you let it and can be derailed through micromanagement or failure to provide feedback. One way to kickstart creative teams to make team member recruitment a team activity, allow staff to choose who they want to work with â€" it shows confidence in their overall abilities. Then position each team member for success by allocating tasks that play to their respective strengths and areas of expertise leveraging peoples strengths can be incredibly empowering and should inspire improved productivity. It’s also important that team members understand their roles and responsibilities and, from time to time, the team leader should review team roles, taking a personal approach with each team member to support and motivate them. Encourage team members to take on responsibility and support them in meeting challenges and overcoming barriers. Don’t forget to recognise and reward success by reflecting on what has been accomplished and call out team members for their contribution. Checklist for the collaborative team: Set realistic expectations with sensible timescales Seek commitment to the objectives Set out ground rules for the team â€" expected behaviours and standards Treat all team member’s ideas as valuable â€" they all play their part so don’t play favourites Facilitate active listening and knowledge sharing within the team Let team members have ownership of their projects with autonomy and empowerment to make decisions Build trust and support the team’s sense of purpose Try to encourage an environment where all team members feel valued and empowered as this helps team members own their work, taking responsibility for their results and accountability for their actions. Expect and encourage creativity, innovation, and different viewpoints from all team members, a really clever idea can come from the most junior team member. Career lessons from Susan Boyles success

Career lessons from Susan Boyles success I never watch American Idol, or other talent shows. I think I got my fill of them in the 1970s, watching year after year of the mind-numbing Miss American pageant. But there was too much hoop-la with Susan Boyle on Britains Got Talent, so I had to see what I was missing. I ended up watching her audition fifty times. Because every time Im feeling slow or unmotivated or depressed, the clip cheers me up. Last night she sang in the semi-finals, and what struck me most while watching her is how much we can learn about our own careers from watching Susan Boyles. For example. Everyone loves to be a shepherd of talent. The act of finding a mentor is actually the act of showing someone you have talent and they can help you find it. Its very, very hard to land in the limelight on your own. So many studies of success from Fortune 500 executives to startup entrepreneurs all show that a key factor is finding people to help you navigate a system that requires many more skills than any one, single person could have. If you ever wonder what you bring to someone who is mentoring you, look at the faces of the three judges when they realize (after four or five notes) that Susan is phenomenal. The joy on their faces is contagious. Thats a big reason people like to watch that video clip: the moment when you see someone is very talented is so rewarding. Its a moment full of excitement and promise and you get to be a part of it because the person is asking you for help. This is why mentoring is magical and electrifying to both sides. And seeing the moment on Britains Got Talent reminds me that I should continuously seek out mentors and show them I perform well with the help they give me. You can only shine if you set the bar high. Susan sang a very hard song: I Dreamed a Dream, from Les Miserables. Not that I know anything about opera. But after watching the video of her at least 50 times, I got curious about how other people sing the song, I Dreamed a Dream. Then I started seeing all the places the song can trip up a singer. If you watch the clip 50 times, you catch Simon Cowell saying, Thats a big song. Its an important thing that she picked a big song. Because if you want to be seen as someone doing something big, you have to pick something big to do. Seth Godin writes about The Dip. Its the time when things look too hard. Its the time when you are trying to do something big, and it is not happening, because doing something big doesnt happen right away, it takes work. And its very hard to do a lot of work if you dont know what will come of it. Most people quit. Thats Seth Godins point: That you have to try something big, and you have to accept that anything big and huge requires you to have a dip a point when you are wondering if it is worth it. And thats where most people quit. For the most part, you cannot do something big without going through this process. I think Im in a dip right now. With my company. I am lucky, because I have Ryan Healy reminding me that were in the dip, doing something big, and we cant quit. And Im lucky because I have been in the dip twice before when I struggled to get on the professional beach volleyball tour, and when I was trying to finish my novel and still did not know that I would eventually get a publisher. So this is what I know about the dip. There is no big win if you dont suffer through it. And the first part of the process is to pick a big song. Settling for a day job does not destroy you. We all love stories of early success. Child actors discovered in Mumbai, three-year-old girls whose singing makes you cry. In the tech industry, being a young founder is so legendary that founders have lied about how old they are. And in mathematics, its always news if someone discovers something later than age 30 because it so seldom happens. We love the stories of early, magical success. So when we find ourselves having to take a day job we dont love in order to do what we do love on the side this is not the narrative we hope for in life. But Susan Boyle is evidence that this narrative works as well. Huge talent can shine through at any age, and the world will respond. Susan Boyle did what so many people do who are not getting paid to do what they love. She kept singing, while she worked day jobs. She sang because she loved singing, and she got better and better and better. A hallmark of talent is loving to practice. And Susan Boyles story is the narrative of the hard work that talent takes. Our lives are first, and foremost, about getting up every day and practicing what we love. What you get paid for, what you get honored for, that is secondary. And success comes for those who work hard.

Guidelines For Writing A Resume Qualifications Example

Guidelines For Writing A Resume Qualifications ExampleWhen it comes to writing a resume, there are few points to consider when doing an example of a resume qualifications example. The more that is put on the document, the less that the recruiter will look at your resume. A resume qualifications example should be concise, but with enough information so that the company will see that you have the requisite qualifications to work for them.Any details or information on the resume should be limited. Just about anything on a resume will help a potential employer to find you. Put as much as you can on your sample, but leave the rest for the recruiter to see. When preparing a resume, one thing to remember is that it is not enough to just have all of the information on the resume listed. Recruiters want to see your qualifications and work experience to put together in a professional way. They want to see examples of how your qualifications match up to what they are looking for. An example of a resume qualifications example is an easy way to show this without even having to talk about the specifics of your job application. If you are having trouble putting together a document that meets the employer's time constraints, the recruiter might prefer to have a little more information on your resume qualifications example. Many of the times, an example of a resume qualifications example might show how you have worked with a certain company before. This can get a new company interested in you and your skills.Another point to consider when preparing a resume is the common errors that are made when writing resumes. What can be done to eliminate some of these mistakes? There are several tips that can be used when writing a resume, and most of them come from having to write a sample. Following these guidelines will keep a writer from being labeled as a rookie when the reality is that he/she is simply not familiar with certain things. For instance, uncommon spelling mistakes will be co rrected on the example document, but not on the actual document. It is always best to write a resume for a company that you have worked for before. Doing so will reduce the chances of spelling mistakes being made on the resume. Also, when writing a resume, always use proper grammar, punctuation, and formatting. In addition to the sample of a resume qualifications example, there are other ways to have a document that the recruiter will want to look at before he/she makes a decision on whether or not to interview you. You could send out a 'request for additional information' letter to them. This can be done before the interview or right after. Just make sure that you are very specific in the letter in terms of the details that are needed, such as how long you have been employed with the company, and the job position that you hold.In conclusion, when writing a resume, it is important to remember that there are many points to consider when writing an example of a resume qualifications ex ample. Whether or not this document is sent before or after the interview, you must be very specific in the types of qualifications that you have met or applied for. Also, using proper grammar and formatting is key.
